Marble tondo sculpted in bas-relief representing the Holy Fa - Lot 194
Marble tondo sculpted in bas-relief representing the Holy Family. Seated on a low wall, Mary holds her Son standing on her left side leaning against her, St. Joseph is in the background; mound with foliage and flowering plants, a tree grows on the top of the wall to the right of the composition. Southern Netherlands, entourage of Laurent Delvaux, second quarter of the 18th century In a carved and gilded wood frame. Diameter : 30,5 cm out of frame. The composition of this intimate scene representing the Holy Family is reminiscent of the Nativity medallion sculpted by Laurent Delvaux for the flesh of the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent in 1745. The treatment of the ground in horizontal parallel lines but especially the naturalistic aspect with the presence of very finely represented plants are elements that can allow a connection with the work of this great sculptor of the southern Netherlands.
