Émile FLAMANT ( 1896-1975) The circus Oil... - Lot 217 - Artois Enchères
Émile FLAMANT ( 1896-1975) The circus Oil on canvas signed lower left and dated (19)23 66 x 100.5 cm In a fine wood and gilded stucco frame ( 102 x 137.5 cm) Born in Bohain in 1896, Émile Flamant spent much of his youth in Caudry. A brilliant student, Émile Flamant studied painting at the Beaux-arts in Paris. He was a pupil of Jonas, where he met Matisse. He soon turned to frescoes, however. After the 1914-1918 war, as churches and other buildings were rebuilt, he perfected the art of fresco More than thirty churches, chapels and seminaries owe their interior decoration to him. Such is the case in Fresnoy-le-Grand, Becquigny and Remaucourt. In addition to these religious works, he also created secular frescoes, notably for the Palais de la Bourse in Lille, and the town halls of Cambrai, Bohain-en-Vermandois and Caudry. Our painting is therefore a rare example of Emile FLAMANT's pictorial work.
