Louis Joseph César DUCORNET (1806-1856). - Lot 304
Louis Joseph César DUCORNET (1806-1856).
Portrait of a Young Woman
Unsigned pastel with a period explanatory cartouche stating that the painting was done at age 16 by the artist and that he was a pupil of WATTEAU (Lille).
56.5 x 43 cm
(pitting and small tear)
Suffering from phocomelia, the artist was born without arms or femurs, and has only four toes on his feet, which he uses to paint.
Although his handicap prevented him from passing the second stage of the Prix de Rome, he was awarded several medals at the Salons during his career. Critics were lenient with him, as Maxime Du Camp noted that "his paintings painted with his feet were no worse than many paintings painted with his hand".
