Late 18th century French school - Carl VAN LOO (1705-1765) ( After) Painting - BELLEVUE Oil on canvas in grisaille style 90 x 116 cm Les Allégories des Beaux-Arts is a series of four door tops, preserved at the Museum of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. They were painted in 1753 by Carle Van Loo, First Painter to the King in 1762 and protégé of the Marquise de Pompadour. It was she who commissioned these works for "the cabinet des Jeux on the first floor of the Château de Bellevue. These paintings illustrate the Fine Arts: painting, sculpture, architecture and music" (Extract from the Marquise de Pompadour's Journal de bord, 1753).
